Pupillage
Group 621's application process for aspirant pupils
Aspirant pupils who wish to do pupillage at Group 621 must:
apply to the pupillage committee of the Johannesburg Society of Advocates ("the JSA"); and
apply to the pupillage sub-committee of Group 621.
Applications to the JSA must be made in such manner and by such deadline as is prescribed by it. It is a prerequisite to do pupillage in Group 621 that the aspirant pupil be accepted to do pupillage at the JSA by its pupillage committee.
What follows relates to applications to Group 621's pupillage sub-committee.
Applications must comprise a letter of application and a curriculum vitae, and must be received by the sub-committee, care of Jean Meiring (jjmeiring@group621.co.za) by no later than 31 July of the year before pupillage.
Aspirant pupils may expect acknowledgement of receipt of the application from the sub-committee within two weeks of receipt of the application, falling which they are asked to enquire whether the application has been received.
The selection process and advice to aspirant pupils of the outcome will take place within about three weeks after the outcome of the JSA’s process (bearing in mind that some candidates might be waitlisted by the JSA and hear of their acceptance only later).
Aspirant pupils who have been accepted to do pupillage at Group 621 will usually be assigned the mentor of their choice or otherwise to another suitable mentor.
Yet, the choice of the group at which and the mentor with whom an aspirant pupil will be placed is ultimately the prerogative of the JSA and acceptance by Group 621 is not a guarantee that the aspirant pupil will ultimately be allocated to Group 621 or to the mentor of their or of the Group's choosing.
Acceptance to do pupillage at Group 621 does not entail, expressly or impliedly, any guarantee of membership of Group 621 after pupillage.
