Michelle holds degrees from UCT (BA LLB) and New York University (LLM), and practices in the areas of general commercial and regulatory law, competition law, complex litigation and public/administrative law, including before commissions of inquiry. Michelle is an Adjunct Professor at the Law School of the University of Cape Town and a Visiting Adjunct Professor at the Law School at the University of the Witwatersrand where she lectures in competition law. Michelle has been annually recognised in legal sector awards. 


Michelle also is a member of the Financial Services Tribunal and Financial Intelligence Centre’s Appeal Board.

She is the co-author of two books, "Precedent and Possibility: the (ab)use of law in South Africa" (2008) and "Lawfare: Judging Politics in South Africa" (2019). Other recent publications include "What future for constitutional democracy in South Africa?” co-authored chapter in VRÜ/World Comparative Law special issue on Autocratic Legalism 2.0: Insights from a Global Collaborative Research Project (2023) and "Personalising and De-personalising Power: The appointment of  executive officers in key state institutions” co-authored report by the New South Institute (2023).

Michelle is an initiator of the 100More Campaign, marking the centenary of women’s access to the legal profession.  

She also is an advocacy trainer for both pupilage and advanced advocacy.


Michelle is a member of the New York Bar, where she litigated in commercial, regulatory and private law jury trials, bench trials and appeals in state and federal courts for 8 years, before returning to South Africa.
